Hey everyone! I know that Valentine’s Day is over, but I wanted to share what I got up to last Thursday.
I would have been very happy with staying in – I’m such a homebody. My husband and I aren’t big on Valentine’s Day because it doesn’t take one day to show someone you care about them. Funnily enough, my husband gave me a bouquet of tulips two weeks before – he knows how much I love flowers. He didn’t have to wait for a ‘special day’ to do something for me.
Anyway, one of my husband’s friends decided that a few of us should spend our Valentine’s Day together over a meal. There were five couples in total and it turned out to be an evening FULL of laughter at Melange in Crouch End – a fusion of French and Italian cuisine.
The annoying thing about going out on Valentine’s Day is having to adhere to a Valentine’s menu 😒, with much less choice than the usual. But we all enjoyed our food in the end – well, I know I did 😅.
For starters, I had scallops and pear. I love seafood – lobster, prawns, shrimp – but I’d never had scallops until last Thursday. It was pan-seared with poached pear and celeriac coulis (which I did not eat haha). I loved the blend of sweet pear, and the scallops were soft and melted in my mouth.
For my main, I had a well done sirloin steak with French fries and rocket. Why were the fries so tasty? My mouth is watering just thinking about them. And the steak was cooked to perfection. I will never have my meat cooked any other way than well done. It wasn’t tough, but my knife cut into it smoothly. It didn’t have as much flavour as expected, but a little salt helped with that.
Unfortunately, due to my dairy allergy I couldn’t have any of the desserts on the menu, which was a shame because the caramel fondant was taunting me.
However, this is where I have to praise the customer service, because I was catered for and was offered two scoops of passionfruit sorbet instead. I’ve only had mango and lemon sorbet before, and now I can add passionfruit to that list. It was packed full of flavour – zesty and delicious. I had nothing left in the bowl 😅.
What I most enjoyed about the evening meal was being with my friends, because I laughed SO MUCH. On behalf of the wives, I have to say that our husbands are hilarious! It’s feel-good moments like we had then that make me smile.
It was the first time I’d been on a collective Valentine’s Day date, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Good food, friends and laughter – I couldn’t have asked for more.
What did you get up to on Valentine’s Day?
